Sailing the Jester Challenges
  • Speaker: George Arnison
  • Jester Challenges are named after the boat used by Blondie Haslar in the first OSTAR - Observer Single Handed Transatlantic Rally.
  • They are low budget, minimally regulated events for single handed sailors in small boats.  Jester challenges now exist on the original OSTAR route, plus Jester Azores, Jester Baltimore
  • George Arnison is a self-taught, wooden boat enthusiast and coastal sailor who has been dabbling with offshore, single-handed sailing in  his 30’ wooden sloop ‘Good Report. Together they participated in the Jester Challenges to Baltimore, Ireland in 2019 and to the Azores in 2021. Following the JAC’21 George and fellow-participant Duncan Lougee were jointly awarded the Ocean Cruising Club’s Seamanship Award for 2021 for successfully getting Duncan’s folk-boat safely to port following a mid-Atlantic gale in which she lost her rudder, including towing her under sail for over 230 NM.
  • George will be talking about the Jester Challenge, and telling the story of his Jester Azores Challenge 2021.
  • While this talk will be in the clubhouse, and also on Zoom, we encourage members to attend the clubhouse and catch up with friends there.

  • The Zoom link will be sent by separate email to club members nearer the time; for non members who wish to participate via Zoom, please contact the membership secretary, membership@guildfordsailing.org who will send you the link.

  • Organiser: David Cockburn
