What a fabulous evening

Tom delivered a wonderful presentation, in his usual energetic style. Full of hilarious anecdotes, ad-libbing and great slides.

It was lovely to have Roz joining him for Q&A, adding her own insights into their great sailing partnership, including her own funny stories. Has anyone else been offered a tipple of Old Spice?

I’m looking forward to finishing Tom’s latest novel, ‘Hurricane Force.’ As Tom said, “It really is a cracking read!”

Event Report - Commodore's Christmas Party & Annual Trophy Awards

How enjoyable was that?

About 30 of our members joined together to try and drink the Commodore's entire supply of mulled wine dry. We almost achieved it!

The savoury snacks were sublime and the mince pies rounded off a table that was creaking with a wide variety of other tasty nibbles.

Our Commodore then called (the by-now raucous group) to order, and set about awarding the club annual trophies for rallies, sailing accomplishments and other special deeds. I can't quite remember all the beneficiaries (well I can, but I'm sworn to secrecy ....!).

I do remember that the Tom Edwards Trophy was awarded to Chris & Denise Granger for an Outstanding Feat of Seamanship in standing-by Shibumi who had lost propulsion in an awkward location, and then providing a tow along the Solent for her. This was not the first time they have assisted member boats in similar situations, so it was well-deserved! Denise was even more delighted to announce that she had successfully tied the all-important towing line bowline knot, and it had lasted!

Then our unusually modest Vice Commodore was hauled up front to be awarded the Bader Rose Bowl for Outstanding Contribution to the Club. Much was made of his efforts in running interesting and varied Winter Programmes, keeping the Events pages up to date, driving technology improvements, the inauguration of the Skipper/Stowaway Weekend, recruitment of new members, and his general enthusiasm for all things GCCC.

Let it not be forgotten that Clive and Debbie were awarded the prize for the best Christmas Jumpers - mainly because of their glasses and headwear that created an all-over Christmas joint illusion.

The Commodore then wished us enjoyment, peace and calm over the Festive Season. Thank goodness he didn’t mention wind or tides …….

And don't forget that the AGM is on the 6th January ... the first Tuesday in 2026, another important evening! Please attend, as there are more changes afoot!!

2026 Summer Cruise

Fourteen members gathered at the club last night for Tony Atkins to lead an informal discussion on the outline plans for next Summer’s club cruise to the West Country. Together with a number of other members, who have expressed interest but were unable to attend last night, this group represents at least twelve boats which may take part in the cruise, or some part of it. A lively discussion ranged over ports of call, choice of marinas or mooring facilities, number and location for lay days and proposals for organised evening meals. Tony will now draw these threads together and make further contact with relevant ports, marinas and yacht clubs, to create firmer plans for presentation to members at a date to be agreed after New Year. If there are any other members who have not previously spoken with Tony but are interested to join the cruise they should make contact Tony in the very near future.

Event Report - Laying-Up Supper and Fun Cheese Tasting

It was difficult to believe the noise levels as Members gathered at the club!! Everybody seemed to be so excited …. although how could they not be excited …. the thought of their chosen Pot Luck dish for supper, then to be followed by a ShottandArmstrong Cheese Tasting Special!

The bar was busy …. thank you to Alan and Elizabeth Hickman for their sterling service …. and it took a lot of ship’s-bell ringing to gain any semblance of order. Supper was served.

In fact, we had all made our prior choices from a Fish Pie, Chicken Curry or Vegetarian Shepherds/Cottage Pie (Musing out loud …. what is the Vegetarian name for a Shepherds/Cottage Pie? Might it be an Allotment Pie?). And how delicious they were … and … as usual, there was plenty, so you could have seconds and taste the ones you hadn’t chosen! .

All followed by a choice of three delicious home-made desserts and cream or custard. On both courses, the lovely “Pancakes R’ Us” ladies exceeded even their own very highly-set standards. Well done and Thank You.

Again it took lots of bell-ringing to get people to stop talking long enough for Jane and Paul to get a few words in about the fun to follow. There was even heckling from some quarters – “Get on with it!”. Teams were “organised” (it was a bit like pushing fog up a steep hill with a sharp stick!), and so the show commenced. Jane started each round with a “Cheesy Fact”.

A team member was blindfolded. A taster portion of cheese was then brought out and the type, country and source animal, together with a personal score out of 10 was written down on a scorecard. The rest of the team then had their own pieces of cheese, and similar questions to answer, as well as writing a description and the opportunity to play a Joker Card.

Although a little hesitant at first, the teams rapidly got into the swing of things and much laughter was heard and many stories were overheard. After 6 rounds, so 6 different cheeses, the scores on the doors were totalled. Really you needed to be there to know who was in which team, but in case you absolutely need to know who won ……

o The most highly scored cheese was Roquefort, followed by a Cheddar from Rudgwick in Sussex called Sussex Charmer.
o The cheapest cheese was a Gouda, the most expensive was the Roquefort.
o The Cheesy Cheesy Cheap Cheap team were the winners, not least because they played both their Jokers perfectly to gain extra points.
o The Mickey Mouse team came a respectable second, and both teams won a box of chocolates for their troubles.
o Mention must be made of the Stinking Archbishops, the Cheesy McCheese Faces, the Old Goats, and the Mousetrap Gang. Without you lot taking part there would be no losers!!

Seriously, it all seemed like lots of fun, and all 28 members carried on chattering as the tables and chairs were quickly rearranged. So much noise ……..

Workshop Report - Chartering in the UK, Mediterranean and Caribbean

On Tuesday 29th October, and organised by Jan Baynham, some 17 members attended, along with 2 visitors that had spotted that our club exists, by way of seeing a “What’s On in Guildford” press release. The power of (non paid-for) advertising!

On the initial round-table introductions I found it fascinating to find out how many members are “quiet” charterers! They may have a UK based boat, but that doesn’t stop them enjoying the warmer waters and climate of far-off chartering locations as well.

A number of topics were put up for discussion, and through the course of the evening all were covered, but not necessarily in the order in which they were laid out! Maintenance and general condition of the boats that has been chartered was a prevailing moan/complaint/concern/worry – but often offset by pretty good support systems, and of course picnic lunches in small bays at anchor with a warm-water swim afterwards. For some, a key part of the enjoyment was sailing, and then socialising in company at a meal in the evening. (I was minded that this sounds a lot like our Summer Rallies, except for the swimming bit!!)

The variety of different chartering models, size of organisations involved, locations were quite mind-opening. Bareboat, flotilla, delivery trips … between the attendees, someone had experience of them all, and it was delightful that so many members did come along with the intention of sharing their experience and knowledge.

It was informal in style and enjoyable to take part in. Well done Jan for organising and fronting the evening!!

The next planned Workshop is on Night-Sailing, on Tuesday 4^th February 2025. Put the date in your diary now!

Well .... it was a fairly stormy evening for those souls who braved the elements to attend this talk at the Clubhouse ...... just like a normal Summer's day on the Solent in fact!!

In spite of of this, we broke all recent records for attendance at a Winter Talk, with 52 Members in evidence including Zoom.

The Talk itself was fascinating, full of detail that could only be obtained from deep and careful investigation into each site and circumstances. It was sometimes a bit like CSI.

Let me just give you a few words: Storm Olga, ARC, Maury, Galapagos, Pilot Chart, Rangiroa, Tahiti, Tonga, Medicanes, Bali, Mumbai, Salalah, Pirates.

Winds that didn’t blow, doldrums that only lasted for 45 minutes, December hurricanes that had only happened 4 times in the past century. Rain, rain, and rain, tropical storms of lightning circles – they saw it all.

News Update - Sailing Tethers

During our recent Winter Talk by Roger Brydges regarding Sailing Accidents and MAIB Investigations, he mentioned a story about one of the Clipper Round the World boats who lost a man overboard, and then flashed up a picture of a 3-way tether.

I have located that Report, which is reproduced below if you follow the link.

The findings I believe apply equally well to any instance of a tether to any fixed point. As a consequence, I have taken an action to use soft shackles (or dyneema loops) to attach safety lines to Pagetal, as these allow movements in an extremely wide range of angles without putting any unexpected angles or pressure on the metal shackle element.

Talk Report - Navigation BC 2000 to AD Now - Jeremy Batch

So, there it was, the first Talk of the 2023-4 Winter Programme. Jeremy Batch, recently retired from the Cruising Association, managed to navigate his way out of Limehouse, London to get to Guildford Station - despite incidents "on the line", cancelled and delayed trains, and roadworks. That boded well for his talk on the topic of "Navigation through the Ages".

The assembled audience of some 32 people at the clubhouse, and another 5 on-line via Zoom, were glad that he made it, as he gave an entertaining presentation of Navigation from the earliest ages.

OK, it did start with some detail about triangles, squares, circles and such-like, but isn’t that what navigation is all about? We learnt where the word "navigation" came from …. Navis - ship and Gares …. way. And by the way, the talk wasn't dry, Jeremy dropped in lots of little snippets and worldly anecdotes, often raising laughter from the audience. And his presentation material was fascinating, with great graphics, and to my mind, especially of the incredible and numerous different instruments used to record the sun and star's position. Ingenious for each epoch of time.

A loud round of applause rounded off a very convivial evening with lots of member natter and chatter, and sets us up nicely for the next talk - from an ex MAIB inspector on recent "Sailing Investigations and Reports". Shall we see if we can get an event better attendance for this next one? What are the odds ….. and Jeremy knew the answer to that conundrum!

News Item - Newtown Creek, a useful update from a Club Member

One of our members who recently visited Newtown Creek has offered an update and some useful information:

Access for most draft of boats is currently possible at all stages of Neap tides. (Still be aware that wind direction is important!).
This offers up a wider range of locations in which to anchor, with less angst!
The pier that has been used in the past to land ashore is now collapsed and un-useable. The alternative to this is to land on the beach, but then you face a longer walk to get anywhere, which may not be in everyone's capability.

Anybody else with useful updates regarding other moorings or marinas worthy of circulation ..... please direct them to Paul Armstrong. Thanks.

Event Report - Pancakes Evening

Strange Goings-On

Driving up from Sussex, mind full of anticipation, even salivating .... what will the "Pancakes R Us" ladies be providing tonight? Based on previous offerings, it would likely be delicious!

As I turned into the gates at the club, I was immediately stopped by a security guard in a hi-vis jacket. As he approached, behind him I could see a whole mass of film crew vehicles, trailers, even a Dining bus. "Surely not" I thought .... " they can't be here to film the GCCC shenanigans!".

"Are you with the yacht club?" he asked. I concurred. "OK sir, please proceed". He knew about it! The mystery deepened ... which TV star would they be sending along to interview the assembled glitterati?

As I entered the clubroom, all was revealed.

The bar was open, drinks were being served, pancakes were being delivered at the counter to order, and people were chatting away, whilst in the corner a lifejacket was being stuffed by two grown men. "So where is the film crew?" I asked. Debbie quietly said they were filming “something” in Ripley, and Papercourt was a convenient place for all their vehicles at night.

But there was a prolific supply of Pancakes, served with 4 or 5 different fillings for each of savoury and sweet types. Delicious! I think I managed 4, just to show willing, you understand!

Then there came a call ..... " Where is the current "Tosser of the Year?". Time for people to try their pancake tossing skills. Of course there were rules ... 10 seconds, had to turn 180°, disqualification if the pancake went on the floor. After about 10 or 12 participants tried their skills, James Hetherington usurped the current champion to be become " Tosser of the Year 2023". Well done! He duly won his prize - all the pancakes that had been on the floor.

Everybody enjoyed the evening, but a small point, where were all the other club members who weren't there .... look at what you missed!! Drinks, eats, fun and laughter.

The Commodore ended with grateful words to the "Pancakes R Us" ladies. We all ended with full tummies!

So we didn't see any film or TV stars, we still have no idea what their subject was going to be. As I said, strange goings-on!! But it was still a fun night.

Studland Bay No Anchor Zone

As of 17th December 2021 a voluntary no-anchor zone is in place within Studland Bay Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Through this voluntary measure, boat users are being asked to help protect precious seagrass habitats in Studland Bay and the many species which rely on them for shelter.

This is the first of two planned phases of MMO management of anchoring within the bay as part of the Studland Bay MCZ Habitat Protection Strategy which was launched on 10 September 2021.

The voluntary no-anchor zone covers the initial core area of seagrass which will then be increased from 1 June 2022 to cover the majority of seagrass beds within the bay and form a permanent voluntary no-anchor zone. This phased voluntary approach will support users of the bay to help protect the important habitats and species which call Studland Bay MCZ home, while recognising the importance of the bay for recreational activities.

UK/EU Entry & Exit Formalities

Following the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, owners of recreational pleasure craft (non-commercial) who sail their craft to and from the United Kingdom (including the Channel Islands) must notify the UK border authorities upon their first arrival into a UK port.

Before leaving the UK (which includes going to the Channel Islands), you must advise the Border Force of your intentions by posting form C1331 (the address it must be posted to can be found on the form).

'Q' Flag

Both non-UK flagged vessels and UK flagged vessels returning from a trip outside of UK territorial waters (12 miles from shore) must now fly the ‘Q’ flag where it can be readily seen as soon as UK waters are entered. The flag must not be taken down until you have finished reporting to the customs authorities. Failure to comply will make you liable to a penalty.

Arriving in the UK

When arriving direct from outside the UK you must phone the National Yachtline on 0300 123 2012. You will need to inform the Yachtline if any of the following apply:

UK VAT has not been paid on the vessel
you have on board goods which are to be treated as surplus stores as per Notice 69A.
you have any prohibited or restricted goods
there is any notifiable illness on board
there are any people on board who need immigration clearance
any repairs or modifications, other than running repairs, have been carried out since the vessel last left the UK
you have any goods for personal use on which you need to declare and pay UK tax or duty and cannot do so via the online service.

Brexit & VAT

Do you keep your boat abroad?

HMRC has angered thousands of British yacht and motorboat owners who keep their boats in EU countries by seeking VAT a second time on the value of their boats when brought back into UK waters.

This threat is based on a long-established EU VAT rule being brought into UK law. 'Union-Goods' status applies to boats on which VAT had been paid in an EU country and allows it freedom of movement throughout the EU (including the UK while still a member) without need for further VAT liability or customs duty.

However, 'Union-goods' status is lost if a boat is exported outside the EU for more than three years (under 'Returned Goods Relief' rules) such that VAT must be paid on the existing boat value when re-imported into EU waters.

HMRC was very clear last year that all British owned yachts would continue to hold full VAT-paid status at the end of the Transition Period, irrespective of the location of the yacht.

However, HMRC has now said that it will bring the Returned Goods Relief rules into UK law and apply them rigidly such that exemption from further VAT would only be available for boats returning to the UK within three years of the date from which they left the UK.

This changed stance only became public in early October, despite attempts by many organisations (including the CA, RYA and British Marine) to engage with HMRC on the issue over several years.

A shocking problem?!

Many marinas abroad are reported as having reverse polarity, with many continental adaptors able to plug in either way round to get the polarity right or wrong!

Most appliances are unaffected by this, but the UK mostly uses single-pole switches where the live supply (brown insulation) in the ‘off’ position doesn’t flow to the appliance, which can then be safely handled. If polarity is reversed then the appliance would remain live through the negative (blue insulation) although switched ‘off’! Read more from this RYA news item:-

MOB Recovery

Although demonstrated in benign conditions, this video encourages the immediate deployment of a floating object (life-ring, fender, etc) pre-attached to an aft mooring cleat by at least 30 meters of floating rope (polypropylene, to minimise the risk of a fouled propeller). A scrambling net attached amidships allows the MOB to climb aboard unaided or to hold on while a halyard is deployed.

The Elcano Challenge

Jimmy Cornell, founder of the ARC, plans to repeat the ship Victoria's historic first circumnavigation of the world. Ferdinand Magellan was killed in the Philippines and his fellow crew member, Juan Sebastian Elcano, took over as captain and returned the ship to Spain in 1522.

The ‘Elcano Challenge’ commemorates the 500th anniversary of this event and Jimmy, who will be 80 next year, has opted for a catamaran named ELCANO with two electric saildrive units and a bank of lithium batteries.

Starting in October from Seville, with stop-offs in S America, he will pass through the Magellan Straits and on to the Cook Islands, Philippines, SE Asia, around the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Verde and arrive home in July 2021.

QHM - LNTM 17/20 REMOVAL OF UPPER HARBOUR NAVIGATION LIGHTS

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN by the Queen's Harbour Master Portsmouth that Five Navigation Lights sited on Piles in the Fareham Lake Area in the upper region of Portsmouth Harbour are to be removed. Work will commence in early February.

2. The lights to be removed are sited on the following Piles:-

Pile 31 – Port Hand Light
Pile 34a - Port Hand Light
Pile 38 - Starboard Hand Light
Pile 39 - Starboard Hand Light
Pile 42 - Starboard Hand Light

3. Once the Navigation Lights are removed a Navigation Warning (NAVWARN) will be issued by QHM Portsmouth to inform water users of their removal and to ensure awareness. The navigation warnings remaining extant until corrective chart action has been undertaken by the UKHO.

4. Therefore, mariners are requested to navigate with extra caution if navigating north of Bedenham Pier during the hours of darkness and reduce speed as necessary.

5. QHM Harbour Control will be kept informed of work in progress. They can be contacted on VHF Ch 11 or by telephoning 02392 723689 for the latest information.

The Cruising Association’s latest position is that “for VAT purposes, the relevant day moves to the end of the transition period as the UK will remain in the customs union during this time”.

Hence Brexit Day, for VAT purposes, now extends to the end of the period for trade negotiations which Boris promises to be completed by the end of this year.

Sharks

Greenland sharks are the longest-living vertebrates known on Earth. One female shark has been radio-carbon dated at around 400 years old. These sharks grow at a rate of 1cm each year to reach reproductive maturity at about age 150. The former vertebrate record-holder was a bowhead whale estimated to be around 200 years old (but still the oldest recorded mammal). The female shark was likely born in the 17th century.

Prince of Wales

The aircraft carrier, which arrived at Portsmouth last month, will be joined by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall on December 10 for a commissioning ceremony.

The ceremony, lasting around 35 minutes, will include an inspection of the ship’s Royal Guard, a service by the Fleet Chaplain, music from the Band of the Royal Marines, cutting of the commissioning cake and a hoisting of the White Ensign to officially designate the ship as a part of the Royal Navy’s operational fleet.

Autonomous Vessels

Saildrone ‘SD 1021’, the first autonomous vessel crossing the Atlantic Ocean in both directions, has completed the voyage of 3,402 nM in a record 68 days.

These unmanned surface vessels (USVs), powered entirely by wind & solar energy, can perform in the harshest ocean conditions whilst collecting data from both above and below the sea’s surface - including air & surface temperature, wind speed & direction, wave height & period, atmospheric pressure, radiation, dissolved oxygen, salinity and acidity levels. ‘SD 1021’ also has an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) for both current strength & direction.

Last month,16th October, 929 passengers held their breath as their 22m-wide Fred Olsen cruise liner became the largest boat to pass through the narrow 25m-wide Corinth Canal and claim a world record!

Suspicious Behaviour

The tragic loss of life concerning a refrigerated trailer is a timely reminder of Project Kraken about tackling maritime border crime around the UK’s mainland coastline. Unusual or suspicious activity should be reported either online (anonymously, if preferred) or by calling the police on 101 (999 in an emergency).

Suspicious activity could include:-

1. Boats arriving at unusual times or to isolated locations.
2. People taking an interest in port security or buildings.
3. Nervous crew who show a lack of maritime protocols.
4. People making attempts to signal or guide boats offshore.
5. People making a large cash payment for maritime equipment.
6. People being somewhere they shouldn’t be.
7. Boats showing signs of unusual modification or minor damage.

Southampton VTS

Notice to Mariners (No.14 of 2019) reminds skippers that:-

a) Vessels over 220m LOA transiting between Hook Buoy and Prince Consort Buoy (known as ‘The Precautionary Area’) are entitled to a ‘clear channel’ with unimpeded passage ahead.

b) All vessels over 150m LOA navigating within the area are entitled to a Moving Prohibited Zone (MPZ) extending 1000 metres ahead of the bow and 100 metres either side.

c) Vessels more than 180m LOA shall not pass each other between Hook Buoy and West Bramble Buoy.

d) To indicate the presence of an MPZ vessels over 150m LOA shall display a black cylinder by day and, by night, 3 all-round red lights in a vertical line.

e) Whenever possible a Patrol Launch (VHF Channel 12; Call Sign ‘’SP’’), showing an all-round blue light, will precede all vessels over 150m LOA within the Precautionary Area.

f) Absence of a patrol launch does not invalidate a vessel’s MPZ.

Single Side Band (SSB) Radio

For quite some time, sailing on the ‘high seas’ meant having to use AM radio communication with a range of up to 200 miles, at least until until HAM and SSB radios became more reliable.

Nowadays, satellite phones are becoming more affordable and able to provide voice, text and email connection anywhere in the world. When going a long way offshore, using a satphone, inexpensive Iridium GO and a laptop for emails may result in SSB becoming largely redundant.

Whitbread is back!

The Ocean Globe Race 2023 retro-event will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first fully-crewed Round the World Race of 1973 (sponsored by Whitbread Breweries).

Only production yachts designed before 1988 of LOA 47-66ft and well proven construction will be eligible. There will be a maximum of 30 entrants and navigation will be limited to sextant paper plots with no satellite communications.

Starting on 10th September 2023, the race creates a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for ordinary sailors to follow the classic four-leg Europe-Africa-Australasia-S America-Europe route with three 2-3 week stopovers.

World Record Bid

Via the NW Passage

Norbert Sedlacek is sailing an ‘Open 60’ yacht to become the first sailor ever to complete a singlehanded, nonstop circumnavigation through all five oceans including both the Arctic and the ‘Southern’ - approximately 34,000nM in around 200 days.

His course takes him through the NW Passage from east to west, then south around Cape Horn and Antarctica in the Southern Ocean to pass Cape Horn a second time before heading north back home to Les Sables d'Olonne.

The World Cruising Club are hosting a free bluewater cruising weekend at Berthon Marina in Lymington to discuss all aspects of 'living the dream'. A wide range of offshore cruising boats will be available together with experts in re-fits, sails, communications & boat equipment.

There will be a parallel series of seminar presentations including preparations for the ARC 2019 or beyond and an opportunity to chat with experienced offshore skippers. Ocean Safety will highlight key considerations such as liferafts, lifejackets, EPIRBs and other items needed for crossing the oceans.

An optional Sailing Supper at LTSC, just a short walk away, is available on the Saturday evening.

Summer Cruise in Plymouth

This charity fund-raising pursuit (NOT a race) takes place on Saturday 15th June 2019 and is open to all sailing yachts.

A memorable day out, the course runs from Portsmouth to the Nab Tower and finishes near Gilkicker Point with prize-giving and BBQ celebrations at Hornet Joint Services Sailing Club, Haslar Creek, Gosport.

Argo Floats

Research data

Argo is an international underwater research program to monitor the oceans’ temperature, salinity, currents and bio-optical properties.

Operating since the early 2000s as a collaborative partnership of more than 30 countries from all continents, almost 4000 drifting ‘Argofloats’ have now been deployed worldwide and colour-coded by the country owning the float:-

Drifting at a 'parking depth’ of 1000 metres, the velocity of currents is calculated from the distance and direction a float drifts. Programmed to change buoyancy every 10 days, the floats dive to a depth of 2000 metres and then move up to the surface whilst measuring conductivity, temperature and pressure to calculate the oceans’ salinity and density.

Data, on surfacing, is then transmitted ashore via satellite and is freely available to everyone without restriction.

Golden Globe Victory

22 April 2019 will mark 50 years since Sir Robin Knox-Johnston & Suhaili completed the first solo, non-stop sail around the world on his return to Falmouth. Presumed lost at sea for over four months until only a few weeks before crossing the finish line this pioneering achievement occurred during 1969, the year of the first moon landing.

Public celebrations take place in Falmouth during Easter to include a parade of sail with Sir Robin & Suhaili recreating the historic moment of crossing the finishing line.

Programme:

Thursday 18 April: Gosport Premier Marina 0800 - Sir Robin departs for Falmouth on board Suhaili. Interviews & photos available on departure.

Saturday 20 April: Sir Robin & Suhaili arrive in Falmouth with an escorting flotilla: Timing TBD.

Sunday 21 April: North Quay, Falmouth 1200 midday: - footprint bronze cast unveiled, marking his first steps back onto land after 312 days at sea. A flotilla of supporting yachts will assemble at St Mawes throughout the afternoon with 40 mooring buoys available for boats up to 12m; boats >12m are to contact HM on 01326 270553 or email: info@stmawesharbour.co.uk. Monday 22 April: National Maritime Museum Cornwall (NMMC) 0930-1130 - "In Conversation with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston & Mike Golding OBE” (tickets £18pp). Falmouth Harbour 1300-1600: 'On the Water' spectacle with Sir Robin & Suhaili plus a flotilla of supporting vessels to re-enact the exact time (1525) that Robin crossed the finishing line. Supporting vessels are welcome to join in or otherwise view from the land, e.g. Pendennis.

The NMMC is staging an exhibition throughout the summer starting April 8 with items & photographs from Sir Robin's personal collection plus a commemorative documentary.

Fitting Out

Guide to essential tasks:

ANTIFOULING
Use a copper-based paint with an anti-slime additive. Sail-drive legs made of aluminium should use zinc-based antifoul.

TOPSIDES
Clean with a soft brush and non-scratch pad then give a good wax & polish.

THE RIG
Go aloft to check the masthead mounting points are secure; holes for wiring are sealed with silicone; furling shackle is sound; tangs & stay end-fittings are good; halyard & boom lift shackles, blocks & sheaves turn easily; tangs & spreader end-fittings are sound; mast step thru-deck wires are watertight; gooseneck is sound; mast is straight, stays are tight and mast pre-bend appropriately set up.

ROLLER FURLING
The whole system - drum & bail, turnbuckle & lower clevis & split pins, foil sections & fasteners and the top swivel should be inspected. (Tying the bosun’s chair to the foil sections with a small loop helps avoid swinging backwards). Flush any dust & dirt from any open bearings on the drum with hot water.

WINCHES
Open the winches and use a solvent to dissolve the old grease. Re-grease the bearings, drums & pawls and reassemble.

STEERING
Turn the wheel/wheels hard in both directions for play in the system indicating a need to tighten wires at the quadrant or weak fasteners in a torque tube installation, especially where the tubes change direction. Check: Sheaves for wire (or mounting brackets for tubes) where failures can occur; Cast quardrant for cracks; Rudder key aligning the quardrant; Autopilot attachment to its rudder post and key; Rock the rudder sideways (if out of the water) to test for play in the bearings or cracks in the mounting.

THRU-HULL FITTINGS
Ensure seacock valves turn easily and are free from corrosion or electrolysis. Check hoses are in good condition, secured with two stainless steel clamps and that wooden/rubber bungs are handy.

ENGINE
Change oil, oil filter & fuel filters and drain off any water in the fuel filter housing. Check raw water impeller for brittleness or signs of fracture around the base of each fin; also the raw water anti-syphon loop. Ensure the drive belts are free from brittleness, hard spots or need for tightening. Zincs anodes - are usually in the heat exchanger, back of exhaust manifold or elsewhere including prop shaft. Check the prop shaft attachment to the transmission for wear. Stern gland leakage should be marginal and only when the shaft is turning - controlled by the stuffing box packing. Rock the shaft & P-strut (if out of the water) for play in the cutlass bearing or attachment problems. Replace worn anodes on the shaft and propeller. Inspect the rubber gasket on sail-drives for leaks or wear.

BATTERIES
Ensure wet battery cells are topped up with de-ionised water. Keep them in the top third of amp-hour cycle after relaunch to refresh the discharge/recharge activity.

WATER TANKS
Flush the empty domestic tanks with a couple of five gallon buckets of mild bleach solution, pumping it through the system one faucet at a time before flushing and filling with fresh water.

Brexit & VAT

Will it affect you?

UK-based vessels will lose EU VAT-paid status on ‘no-deal’ Brexit-day or at the end of any transition period. However, if located, at that time, in an EU port or sailing in EU waters it will keep its VAT-paid 'Union' status.

It should be borne in mind that non-EU citizens sailing in EU waters will only be allowed to stay, in person, for a maximum of 90 days in any 180 whilst then leaving their boat in the EU in order to retain its Union status.

A UK-based yacht will lose it’s EU VAT-paid status and become liable again 18 months after any sustained period of re-entry into the EU (i.e. on expiry of EU ‘Temporary Importation Relief’).

In summary, UK-based yachts wishing to stay in the EU longterm should be located in an EU port on Brexit day in order to retain their EU VAT-paid status (keeping marina receipts, dated photographs, insurance certificates etc as evidence). Conversely, a British ‘EU-based’ yacht may become UK-VAT liable when eventually 'imported' back into the UK (currently after 3 years).

‘One and All’

‘One and All’ has claimed 3rd place on the podium, having arrived back in Les Sables d’Olonne after completing a non-stop single-handed ‘Golden Globe’ race around the world. Previously owned by GCCC Past Commodore Tony Atkins and circumnavigated by Uku Randmaa of Estonia, ‘One and All’ crossed the finishing line at 0900 UTC today after almost 252 days at sea (and with only three packets of powdered soup left in the larder!).

Uku Randmaa thanked God for his safe return, then his boat ‘One and All’ (a Rustler 36) and finally his Hydrovane self-steering gear. “My biggest worry was keeping the boat in one piece..... the Southern Ocean waves were amazing, ... but barnacles were a continuous problem.”

“This was my biggest dream in life and I am very, very happy to have realised it.”

'Maiden' Documentary

International Women's Day

Tracy Edwards, guest speaker at GCCC clubhouse last year, says she did not form an all-women crew for the cause of feminism, but to do what she simply loved doing best - sailing; and then going on to skipper a 58’ yacht ‘Maiden’ in the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race (precursor to the current Volvo Ocean Race).

‘Maiden’ is now the subject of a film documentary about Edwards’ struggle to put a female team on the water while tolerating chauvinism within the yachting community and rejection from potential sponsors.

The film, ‘Maiden’, features interviews & original film footage of the 1989-90 race and is due for release in UK cinemas from today - International Women’s Day!

Sound of the Sea

A sculpture, ‘Sound of the Sea’ (designed by pupil Ada Kohlmaier-Sims of The Island Free School) has won 1st Prize in the Cowes Harbour Landmark Design Competition for a theoretical piece to be sited on the Cowes Breakwater:-

Artistic impressions of ‘Sound of the Sea’ on Cowes Breakwater.

According to the panel of judges “its spiral shell-like form was in keeping with the natural sea environment, the white triangular shape fits with the shape and colour of passing sails and the sculpture... would complement Cowes seafront environment.”

The award winners will be presented with their prizes, in Cowes, on 1st March 2019.

Summer Cruise 2019

Tony Atkins, GCCC Past Commodore, has produced an itinerary for the club's two-week West Country Cruise in June together with a list of interested boats and potential 'stowaways'. A passage plan is shortly to be posted on the website and a WhatsApp group established for those wishing to keep in touch.

Several options are indicated for arriving at Dartmouth and skippers will be asked to submit their intended route nearer the time. Those skippers and stowaways already expressing interest have been asked to keep Tony informed as their plans firm up so that advanced marina and dinner reservations can be made.

Boat and crew lists will be finalised in early May by which time skipper, crew and potential stowaway arrangements should have been made between themselves.

RIOW Race

The Round-Isle-of-Wight Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club since 1931, will this year start and finish outside Cowes on Saturday 29th June. Early bird discounts for online entry are currently available until 28th February.

Around 1,500 boats take part each year including monohulls, multihulls, gaffers, classics and dayboats. The current monohull record stands at 3hr 43m 50s set in 2013 and the multihull record at 2hr 22m 23s set in 2017.

A public entertainment programme starts on the Parade at 12:00 on Friday 28th June.

New Lobster Pot Group

Lobbying by both the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and the Cruising Association (CA) has pursuaded the Maritime & Coastguard Agency to convene a ‘Lobster Pots & Small Craft Safety Working Group’. The Group is composed of members from the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations (NFFO), RYA and CA tasked with seeking better ways for avoiding small craft entanglement and also improved methods of law enforcement.

The first meeting took place at CA House on 16 January 2019 to prioritise their tasks and set up a review of existing regulatory powers across the UK.

Golden Globe Race

GGR 2018-19

73-year old Frenchman Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, in his Rustler 36 ‘Matmut’, has completed the Golden Globe Race non-stop circumnavigation back to Les Sables d’Olonne in France. He crossed the finishing line early this morning after 212 days at sea. He is the first to finish since the race started last July and was greeted alongside by a huge welcoming crowd and a large bottle of champagne presented by Robin Knox-Johnson (winner of the original 1968-69 race).

Dutchman Mark Slats, in second place, has diverted to La Caruna following advice to avoid being dangerously trapped on a lee-shore in the Bay of Biscay by an approaching storm. Third placed Uku Randmaa of Estonia lies 3,600 miles astern in his Rustler 36 ‘One and All’ (previously owned by GCCC Past Commodore Tony Atkins and sold specifically for use in the race).

Freak Waves

Fact or Fiction?

A 'freak wave' has been recreated for the first time! The Oxford and Edinburgh University research workers also noted a similarity to the famous Japanese woodblock print 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' by artist Katsushika Hokusai (c1829).

The laboratory-induced wave was formed by varying two smaller wave groups until their crossing angle reached 120 degrees. These freak or rogue waves, officially known as 'Draupner' waves, appear without warning and may cause the catastrophic sinking of large ships (not to mention small sailing boats!)

The Draupner (or 'New Year') wave measured 25m and was the first rogue wave ever detected by a measuring instrument. It crashed into the Draupner Oil Rig platform off the Norwegian Coast on 1 January 1995, fortunately without injury to personnel or damage to the rig. No longer can such waves be considered a mythological figment of the sailor's imagination!

Cowes New Eastern Channel

Eastern Channel Dredge

A new Eastern Channel will be dredged to 2.25m below chart datum and provide a more direct route to the Main Fairway than the existing Small Craft Channel. The dredge will start early in January 2019 and be completed within eight weeks. The existing Small Craft Channel will stay open most of the time but there may be occasions when only the Main Fairway can be used. See LNTM No. 33(T) 2018 for more details.

A Leap Forward?

Accidental drowning after slipping through the guard rail and being towed face-down at the end of a two-metre tether has been the subject of considerable debate.

In response to this problem TeamO Marine developed a ‘BackTow’ lifejacket that towed face-up, receiving widespread acclaim in 2013 for innovation.

An ‘A-frame’ clips as standard to a front loop on the harness and runs up the lifejacket to a point behind the neck. It releases manually under load, similar to that of a parachute ripcord.

Working with Crewsaver and Artemis AC, TeamO Marine have developed an improved ‘MkII BackTow’ including a personal AIS pocket and optional AutoLock Tether (“a seatbelt for the sea”). AutoLock’s lightweight reel self-adjusts tether length when moving around the deck. Any fall is immediately arrested, after which the pressure is eased and the reel starts working again.

BackTow MkII lifejackets with optional AutoLock are due out by autumn 2018.

World Distance Record

New 24 Hour Distance Record

Alex Thomson (one of our top British Skippers) and his crew have now officially broken the 24hr distance world record, set earlier this year, in a 60ft monohull.

Sailing ‘HUGO BOSS’, an IMOCA 60 race boat based in Haslar Marina-Gosport, Alex travelled 539.71 nM over 24 hours at an average speed of 22.49 knots, ratified last week by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.

Red Diesel

It’s slow demise?

Red diesel is taxed at a lower VAT rate (5%) for domestic purposes (heating, charging batteries, hot water, refrigeration etc) but at the full rate (20%) for propulsion - fuel duty already being included in the pump price (- got it?!).

To best comply with the full rate for propulsion, UK leisure boats have been declaring a voluntary 60/40 split between the different tax rates (i.e. 60% used for propulsion & 40% for domestics) - agreed across the board with HMRC. However, a 20/80 (e.g. ‘live-aboards’) or any other split is possible if it can be justified.

EU rules say a "fiscal marker" (red dye in the UK, green dye in Ireland etc.) must be present in diesel not taxed at the full rate. In May 2013 the EU Commission formally requested the UK to amend its legislation and ensure that “private pleasure boats, such as luxury yachts, can no longer buy lower taxed fuel intended for fishing boats". HMRC challenged this request as being ‘impractical’ and so the Commission referred the case to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

The ECJ has now concluded (17th Oct, Case 503/17) that diesel taxed at the full rate (i.e. for propulsion) should not be marked because it undermines the purpose of the marker and it has dismissed HMRC’s view that this is impractical.

No deadline has been set for when the necessary adjustments to accommodate this ruling must be made.

But what about the effects of Brexit?

Cowes Harbour Commission has launched a competition to inspire an iconic new ‘welcome landmark‘ for installation on the recently built 350m long detached breakwater. Isle of Wight students, aged 14-18 years, will design a piece of artwork or sculpture to reflect the port’s maritime past including it's renowned sailing reputation and a "vision for the future.”

MAIB Report on Throw Bags

MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) has reported on the failure of a batch of rescue throw bags. To ensure that a throw bag rescue line is ‘fit for purpose’ it is recommended that:-

● The entire length should be examined for joins or other discontinuities by feeling along the line with bare hands to identify rough patches or lumps and, if any are found, the line should be removed from service and the supplier informed.

● Knots, splices or other methods of securing the ends of the rescue line should also be checked for integrity.

DSC Calling

MMSI Numbers
How useful are they?

The club’s recent VHF Workshop prompted a valuable trial ‘on the water’ for both Individual and Group DSC calling using MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) Numbers.

To benefit from DSC (digital selective calling) members are advised to:

Show their Individual MMSI No. on the club website for other members to call them up.

Store the club's Group MMSI No. 023200070 in their VHF set as well as their own Individual MMSI No.

Tony Atkins, who initiated the trial, has produced a document outlining the findings which can be found here.

A brief summary about the club's Group MMSI No. can be found in the 'Rally & Cruise Information' area of the club website. Consult your VHF manual for instructions on how to use DSC. Rally Officers are encouraged to use DSC as a way of keeping members 'up to speed' when on rally!

Who should you call?

The Cruising Association confirms with Coastguard (MCA) that "Radio checks with HMCG should not be a first resort as it ties up the air wave and increases operator workload.” Furthermore, “checks with other vessels or shore stations at 1W power and at a distance of around 8 miles provide a much better test of antenna and radio set performance” and that “radio checks should be carried out primarily with marinas and other shore stations or with other vessels. National Coastwatch Institute shore stations are usually well placed for such calls which should be made on Channel 65".

A personal half-yearly view

Wow, what a blazing summer - long may it last; ideal for sailing, but the gardens are parched and hosepipe bans are already appearing.

No matter, the rally season is well underway and the club’s annual two-week summer cruise in June (this time to the Channel Is & N Brittany) was again a great success; a fleet of eight boats competently headed up by Tony Atkins (Past Commodore 2013-15) in ‘Sarinah’ - read all about it in Rally & Cruise Reports. Let’s hope another volunteer comes forward to plan next year’s cruise (‘Going East’ ??); there’s plenty of help available!

I must own up to missing out on being one of those ‘Greenhorn' contenders who make our rallies so successful and who hold the whole summer programme together. Well done to Chris for setting up the programme and for updating the attendees spreadsheet on our club website. Also well done to our valued Rally Officers who keep the venues informed about our registrant’s details.

I’m really looking forward to the next rally at Lymington - ten boats registered and the rally now full; but I guess latecomers can always try booking ‘independently’!

I was pleased to see another of our ‘anchoring-in-company’ midweek rallies take shape - attracting four boats to a rendezvous at Newtown Creek. No doubt the combination of fine weather and tranquil surroundings was a big draw. The report should be interesting, especially as we’ve not had a one since S’ton Town Quay! Where are our budding reporters? And a few pics would be useful!

I gather the club’s annual Summer BBQ was a triumph, held in glorious sunshine with a record (i.e. best ever!) turnout to date. And such a great outlook over the clubhouse lake. So sorry I couldn't be there - but you all know why. And I still get flak for it!

Jan Baynham’s introduction of ‘Workshops’ adds to the club's continuing development and helps promote growth in our membership; novel ideas are always sought and the Committee is pleased to receive them - so please keep 'em coming!

By way of a little history, our website now sports a list of Past Commodores stretching back to the club’s origins in 1973. Many thanks to Shaun Atkins and Martin Lodge for jogging their memories and digging out the old files. Finding out about other 'Past Officers' proved more challenging, but is still open to offers!

With plenty of sailing yet to enjoy we can put off any thoughts about the Laying-up Supper and launch of our exciting Winter Programme in October.

The club appears at peace with itself and enjoying the fruit of it’s labours.

CG66 migration

From 11 July this year, HM Coastguard’s CG66 safety identification scheme will have transferred to RYA SafeTrx for all Search and Rescue (SAR) operations within UK territorial waters. Enhanced functionality is available when SafeTrx is used in conjunction with an optional mobile app. RYA SafeTrx is free, irrespective of RYA membership.

Golden Globe Race 2018

Starts July 1st, marking the 50th anniversary of the first single-handed sailor to complete a non-stop voyage around the world. A prize of £5000 was additionally awarded for the fastest voyage.

Of the original nine entrants only Robin Knox-Johnston finished, taking both prizes - the Golden Globe Trophy and the £5000!

CA Love Cup 2017

I am very pleased to let you know that your Commodore has been awarded the CA Love Cup for last year's two-week GCCC Summer Cruise to Normandy's 'Baie de Seine'. The Cup is awarded annually by the Cruising Association for the “best log of a journey lasting less than 30 days”.

The Love Cup was originally presented to the Cruising Association in 1911 by Mr John Love, a founding member of the Association and it’s first President. It is the oldest trophy to be awarded by the club.

I would very much like to share this award with all GCCC members and especially those who accompanied ‘Shibumi’ on the cruise - namely Jane & Martin Shott (crew) of 'Shibumi'; Gareth & Isabelle of ‘KiK’; Chris, Denise, Andrew & Margaret of ‘Cadh ‘Ruadh’; Clive, Brian & David of ‘Quickstep’ and Simon & Jorgen of ‘Lacewing’.

I accepted the award at CA House in London on 28th March 2018, immediately following Tom Cunliffe’s Hanson Lecture on ‘Ice with Everything’ and just before sitting for the Association Dinner.

I guess some may feel in the grip of a cold and damp winter, yet there is a glow in the air with Spring around the corner. Crocuses and snowdrops are fading, daffodils are in bud and March is only a fortnight away. We can put away our angle grinder, touch up the keel with a final coat of epoxy resin, wield our trusty paint-roller and think about casting off our very practical but rather tattered old boiler suit.

This annual toil of crouching beneath the hull - usually performed alone but occasionally with a little sympathetic help - is what drives a few of us out of the house and onto the road for a romantic (or not) journey to the south coast. Or maybe you've enough dosh to pass all this effort over to the boatyard - depending on how intimate you wish feel about your boat!

But there may be some lingering doubts - have I booked my slot for the re-launch or am I still waiting to replace the anodes? Have I checked the propeller or the cutlass bearing? What about my seacocks, gearbox oil, engine service - and general all-round polishing? Did I clean the two-stroke outboard, flush it with fresh water and run it dry to clear the carburettor of fuel? Have I washed the genoa sheets? Are my sails back from valeting? I’m sure something was said about all this on the discussion forum!

But no worries, when the jobs are all done we can look forward to a new season, heralded by New Member’s Night (March 20th) when Chris will officially launch the Summer Programme. And then two weeks later there’s the Fitting-out Supper & Quiz by which time we can feel more confident in our plans for the coming season. I look forward to hearing about them.

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS No 24(T) of 2017

COWES CHAIN FERRY

Clearance Depths
14 August 2017

Notice is hereby given that ..... Hydrographic surveys to measure clearance over the chains have been undertaken and the following temporary restrictions are in place:

Maximum Permissible Draught = Actual Tide Height + 1.1 metres

Mariners are advised that this is a ‘worst case’ (mid-ebb spring tide) when the ferry is berthed on the west bank and is being set to the north. Mariners are advised that increased clearances are available during this mid-ebb period when the ferry is berthed on the east bank. If your vessel is deep drafted and you have the need to transit the chain ferry crossing during this mid-ebb spring period, CHC strongly suggest that you allow the chain ferry to cross and be moored on the east bank before proceeding with caution.

Greater clearances are possible during other stages of the tidal cycle, particularly at High Water. Please see the indicative survey diagrams below.

All mariners are reminded that the maximum clearance depths are achieved at the mid-point between the prow of the Chain Ferry and the opposite shore. Vessels should avoid passing close to the prows of the ferry due to the obstruction of the chains as they slope down to the riverbed.

Any deep draught vessel or any other vessel requiring an unimpeded passage should contact the Chain Ferry, providing as much notice as possible, on VHF Channel 69.

Further chain adjustments and survey checks will be carried out in the near future, with the aim of increasing depths over the chains throughout all tidal cycles whilst maintaining a normal ferry service. The aim of these scheduled works will be to restore navigation clearance depths over the chains to previous reported depths for the previous ferry.

Further surveys will be carried out as works require and all mariners will be advised of any changes to clearance depths via Cowes Harbour Local Notice to Mariners.

All mariners are advised that Cowes Harbour LNTM 15 of 2016 remains in force and all vessels should navigate with particular caution when approaching the Chain Ferry, especially with a following tide.

HMS Queen Elizabeth Enters Portsmouth

Britain's future flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth sailed into her home port of Portsmouth for the first time today.

Greeted by thousands of people lining the Portsmouth seafront, the 65,000-tonne carrier was met with the warmest of welcomes as she arrived in her home port just after 7am.

Royal Navy sailors lined up in ceremonial procedure on the flight deck of the mammoth ship, standing alongside civilian colleagues from the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, as she passed the Round Tower.

HMS Queen Elizabeth was also greeted with a flypast of helicopters from the Fleet Air Arm, including Wildcat and Merlin helicopters and Hawk jets.

Captain Jerry Kyd, the Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth, said: "HMS Queen Elizabeth's first entry into her home port of Portsmouth is an historic, proud and exciting occasion, not only for those of us serving in her, but also for the wider Royal Navy, the city of Portsmouth and the entire nation."

"The UK's future flagship, as well her sister ship HMS Prince of Wales, will be powerful symbols of Britain's outward facing global character and ambition. The Royal Navy has a very special relationship with Portsmouth dating back half a millennium and both carriers will ensure the Navy's city remains the focal point of our great nation's maritime power for generations to come."

The ship will berth at the newly-opened Princess Royal Jetty at Her Majesty's Naval Base Portsmouth, which will be home to both of the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers. The second, HMS Prince of Wales, will be officially named in a ceremony at Rosyth next month.

The berth has been upgraded and strengthened to support the carriers as part of a raft of infrastructure upgrades which took place ahead of the arrival of the ship.

The approach channel to Portsmouth has also been made deeper and wider, from its original 210 metres to 450 metres, and the channel has been straightened as much as possible to avoid large course alterations.

Bespoke navigational lights, a high-voltage electrical supply and specialist carrier-specific gangways, known as 'brows', have also been provided as part of a £100m programme of works to prepare Portsmouth for the arrival of the carrier.

Sir Peter Gershon, Chairman of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, said: "I am incredibly proud to witness HMS Queen Elizabeth arrive at her home port of Portsmouth Naval Base having successfully completed the first phase of her sea trials programme.

"Over 10,000 people have come together to bring HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales to life, from early design to the magnificent ships they are today. It is thanks to their industrious endeavours and pride that we have achieved this historic moment in the programme to bring HMS Queen Elizabeth into service.

"We're excited to complete the remainder of her test and commissioning programme before delivering her to the Royal Navy by the end of the year."

With only three other countries in the world building aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth will give Britain the capability to lead the way in tackling global issues in an increasingly uncertain world, from providing humanitarian relief to high-end war fighting.

And with the state-of-the-art F-35B Lightning fighter jets on track to make their first trial flights from the carrier's deck next year, the UK is now building towards delivering carrier strike capability. Both aircraft carriers are being delivered by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance.

Leading Airman Liam Forgeron, 28, from Portchester, is an aircraft handler on board HMS Queen Elizabeth. He said: "Being a local lad, I am extremely proud that Portsmouth will now be the base port for the nation's future flagship.

"The historic port has a long and proud association with the Royal Navy and the arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth will cement this relationship for a further 50 years. As a Royal Navy aircraft handler, serving on board this mighty vessel is a real honour, as I too get to make history in my home town."

Southampton Water Sailing Association

The first race is free and thereafter an entry fee of £10 per race is charged or £50 for the season. Racing is very friendly and many aspiring racers have cut their teeth on this series before moving on to more challenging events.

RNLI Boat Race

The draw for GCCC's entry to the RNLI Alternative Boat Race was held at the AGM on January 13th. First prize, which provides entry for two to the race itself including dinner on April 10th, was won by Richard Vail. Second prize, which wins the model lifeboat used to compete in the race, was won by Ron Moore. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all other participants.

National Coast Watch

National Coastwatch have been allocated a new dedicated nationwide VHF radio channel which is due to go live at all 50+ NCI Stations in England & Wales on 1st October 2014.

The channel is duplex on international marine VHF Channel 65 and it will be used primarily to allow NCI Stations to pass routine local information to nearby vessels including current weather condition reports and radio checks where required

Round Island Race

Many congratulations to Clive White who finished the RIR, an achievement in itself, in 19 position overall. Clive left the Baie De Seine summer cruise on Wednesday after providing us all with a fine afternoon tea with homemade cakes. He left so that he could get Quickstep's bottom scrubbed which clearly paid off in such light airs. Unless anyone knows better this has to be the highest placed GCCC boat in the RIR ever

Membership subscriptions

At the AGM it was agreed that the membership subscription should increase to £45 per year with a £10 discount for prompt payment. This will be effective for renewals on 1st October 2014 and those new members joining on or after 1st July 2104 (new members joining after 1st July will renew on 1st October 2015)
